# GLB to STL Converter > To convert GLB to STL, load the GLB in a tool that reads glTF and export its meshes as an STL file. Kenerate's free converter does it in your browser: drop the .glb, set the longest side in millimetres, keep Z-up for slicers on and download a binary STL. Textures and colours are dropped. Nothing is uploaded. URL: https://kenerateai.com/glb-to-stl Publisher: Kenerate AI (https://kenerateai.com) Last updated: 2026-10-01 ## Key facts - Price: Free, no account - Converts: GLB (glTF 2.0 binary, including Draco / Meshopt) → binary STL - Orientation: Y-up turned Z-up for slicers (on by default) - Scale: Keep units or fit longest side to 25–200 mm - Dropped: Textures, colours, materials, animation - Privacy: Converted locally — no upload - Right way up: glTF is Y-up; slicers are Z-up. The converter rotates the model so it lands standing on the build plate, not lying on its back. - Real size: glTF is in metres, so a model can arrive tiny. Set the longest side — say 75 mm for a figurine — and the STL is scaled for you. - AI models welcome: GLBs from Tripo, Meshy, Rodin and Hunyuan 3D convert directly, including Draco-compressed files. - See the mesh first: Use Clay to judge the bare shape without its texture — the STL will look like this. - Unpack: The GLB's JSON and binary buffers are read; compressed meshes are decoded. - Flatten: Every mesh is placed with its node transforms so parts keep their positions. - Scale and orient: Optionally fit to a size in millimetres and rotate Y-up to Z-up. - Write: Triangles are written to a binary STL and downloaded. - GLB (glTF 2.0 Binary): Single-file scene with PBR materials; by Khronos Group, 2017 (glTF 2.0). Holds: Meshes and PBR materials, Textures in the same file, Animation and skins. Lacks: Units beyond metres, CAD precision. Best for: Web, AR and real-time apps — the “JPEG of 3D”. Opens in: Browsers (three.js, model-viewer), Blender, Unity, Unreal, Godot. - STL (Stereolithography): Triangle mesh (binary or ASCII); by 3D Systems, 1987. Holds: Triangle surfaces, Facet normals. Lacks: Colour and textures, Units, Materials. Best for: 3D printing — every slicer opens it. Opens in: Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer, Blender. - 3MF (3D Manufacturing Format): ZIP package with XML; by 3MF Consortium, 2015. Holds: Meshes with units (millimetres), Colours and materials, Several objects and build plates. Lacks: Animation. Best for: Modern 3D printing and multi-colour prints. Opens in: Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, Cura, Windows 3D Builder. - Made for — GLB vs STL: Real-time display: web, AR, games | 3D printing - Textures and PBR — GLB vs STL: Yes, embedded | No - Units — GLB vs STL: Metres | None (slicers assume mm) - Up axis — GLB vs STL: +Y | Slicers expect +Z - Animation — GLB vs STL: Yes | No - Opens in slicers — GLB vs STL: Rarely | All of them ## Steps 1. Open the GLB — Drop your .glb onto the box above, or try the sample astronaut. 2. Inspect it — Switch to Clay to see the bare shape the STL will have. 3. Set size and orientation — Fit the longest side to a size in mm; leave Z-up on. 4. Download the STL — Click Download STL and open it in your slicer. ## In depth ### Why GLB needs converting for printing glTF 2.0 is a delivery format for real-time 3D; its spec defines metres and a +Y up axis [8]. Slicers read STL [1] or 3MF [5] and expect millimetres with Z up. Converting is mostly about getting those two right. ### Is the mesh printable? Screen models can have thin shells, open edges or parts that only touch. A printable mesh should be closed (watertight) and thick enough for your nozzle — usually 1–2 mm walls for FDM. Most slicers repair small holes automatically. ### Making a printable model with AI Engines like Rodin can return STL directly, and others return GLB you can convert here. The Kenerate 3D Studio offers nine engines on any paid plan or credit pack. A: Yes — free, no account, no watermark. Q: Is my GLB uploaded? A: No. It's converted on your device. Q: Why is my STL tiny in the slicer? A: glTF uses metres, so a 10 cm model is 0.1 units. Choose a size in “Fit longest side to” before downloading. Q: Why is the model lying on its side? A: Keep “Z-up for slicers” on. It rotates glTF's Y-up model so it stands on the build plate. Q: Will the colours carry over? A: No. STL can't store colour. For colour prints, convert to 3MF instead. Q: Is an AI-generated model printable? A: Often, after a check. Look for thin parts and floating pieces in Clay view, and let your slicer repair small holes. Q: Can I convert STL to GLB? A: Yes. Open the STL in the free 3D model converter and pick GLB. STL has no colour, so the GLB gets a plain material you can replace in Blender or a web viewer. As with every tool here, the file is converted in your browser and never uploaded. Q: Does it support glTF (.gltf)? A: Use the .glb version — a single-file upload can't include a .gltf's separate .bin and textures. ## Related pages - AI 3D Model Generator: https://kenerateai.com/ai-3d-model-generator - Image to 3D: https://kenerateai.com/image-to-3d-converter - AI STL Generator: https://kenerateai.com/ai-3d-printing-model-generator - Text to 3D: https://kenerateai.com/text-to-3d-generator ## Sources - Wikipedia — STL (file format): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STL_(file_format) - Wikipedia — Wavefront .obj file: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wavefront_.obj_file - Wikipedia — FBX: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FBX - Khronos Group — glTF: https://www.khronos.org/gltf/ - 3MF Consortium — 3MF specification: https://3mf.io/specification/ - Wikipedia — Universal Scene Description (USD / USDZ): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Scene_Description - Wikipedia — PLY (file format): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PLY_(file_format) - Khronos Group — glTF 2.0 specification: https://registry.khronos.org/glTF/specs/2.0/glTF-2.0.html - Apple — AR Quick Look: https://developer.apple.com/augmented-reality/quick-look/ - three.js — documentation: https://threejs.org/docs/ - Prusa Knowledge Base — Modeling with 3D printing in mind: https://help.prusa3d.com/article/modeling-with-3d-printing-in-mind_164135 - Prusa Blog — lithophanes and filament transparency: https://blog.prusa3d.com/lets-play-with-filament-transparency-how-to-make-amazing-lifelike-color-photos-with-just-a-simple-color-change_104338/ - Polymers (2024) 16(20):2862 — FFF parameters and translucency of PLA: https://doi.org/10.3390/polym16202862 - Wikipedia — Lithophane: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithophane - W3C — CSS Values and Units Level 3 (absolute lengths): https://www.w3.org/TR/css-values-3/ - Adobe Substance 3D — OpenGL vs DirectX normal maps: https://experienceleague.adobe.com/en/docs/substance-3d/bakers/common-questions/what-is-the-difference-between-the-opengl-and-directx-normal-format - Blender Manual — Normal Map node: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/render/shader_nodes/displacement/normal_map.html - Wikipedia — Normal mapping: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_mapping - SIL Open Font License: https://openfontlicense.org/
