## In depth

### Where phonk comes from
Phonk grew out of 1990s Memphis rap tapes — lo-fi, dark and sample-heavy — and was revived online in the 2010s [1]. Drift phonk, the version most people know from car and gaming edits, speeds it up and turns the cowbell into the lead melody over distorted 808s [2].

### The phonk sound, piece by piece
Name these in your prompt:
- Cowbell — a pitched cowbell riff, often the main hook.
- 808 bass — distorted, pitched down, loud in the mids.
- Vocal chops — short, repeated samples; menacing or hypnotic.
- Drums — hard kicks and snappy claps; funk-style for Brazilian phonk.
- Texture — tape hiss and saturation for Memphis, clean and loud for drift.
