Method 1 · plain backgrounds

Remove a solid background with Fuzzy Select

Quickest in GIMP when the background is one even colour.

  1. Step 1: Open the image

    Open your photo in GIMP.

  2. Step 2: Add an alpha channel

    Without it, deleted pixels turn white instead of transparent. If the menu item is greyed out, the layer already has one.

  3. Step 3: Pick Fuzzy Select

    Also called the magic wand; shortcut U. In the tool options, turn on Antialiasing and set Threshold to about 15–40.

    Tip: Low threshold = tighter selection. Raise it if the background has gradients.

  4. Step 4: Click the background

    Click the background. Hold Shift and click to add more areas, such as gaps between arms.

  5. Step 5: Delete it

    Press Delete. The background turns into a grey-and-white checkerboard, which means transparent. Then clear the selection.

Method 2 · hair and fur

Remove a background around hair with Foreground Select

GIMP's best tool for people and pets. Slower, but it keeps soft edges.

  1. Step 1: Add an alpha channel

    Without it, deleted pixels turn white instead of transparent. If the menu item is greyed out, the layer already has one.

  2. Step 2: Pick Foreground Select

    It lives in the Free Select group of the toolbox.

  3. Step 3: Draw a rough outline

    Click or drag loosely around the subject, including all the hair, and press Enter. The outside turns dark blue.

  4. Step 4: Paint over the subject

    With “Draw foreground” selected, paint across the subject — you don't need to reach the edges. Use a thicker stroke for large areas and a thinner one near hair.

    Tip: Turn on Preview to see the mask. Paint with “Draw background” to remove areas it wrongly kept.

  5. Step 5: Make the selection

    Press Enter (or click Select) to turn the mask into a selection.

  6. Step 6: Invert and delete

    Invert the selection with Ctrl+I and press Delete.

Method 3 · white backgrounds

Remove a white background with Color to Alpha

The one-step option for logos, icons, line art and signatures.

  1. Step 1: Open Color to Alpha

    It adds an alpha channel for you.

    Keep the default white, or pick the exact background colour with the eyedropper, then click OK.

    Tip: Great for logos, line art and signatures. It also makes light parts of the subject slightly see-through, so avoid it on white clothing.

Why isn't my GIMP background transparent?

The background turns white, not transparent

The layer has no alpha channel. Add one (Layer → Transparency → Add Alpha Channel) and delete again.

A white or coloured halo around the subject

Shrink the selection by 1–2 px before you delete (Select → Shrink), or clean the edge afterwards with Colors → Color to Alpha on the halo colour.

The exported file has a white background

It was saved as JPG. Export as .png (or .webp) to keep transparency.

Foreground Select is slow or freezes

Very large photos slow it down. Scale the image first (Image → Scale Image), or use an AI background remover for big batches.

Fuzzy Select grabs part of the subject

Lower the Threshold, or hold Ctrl and click to subtract the area from the selection.

Add an alpha channel first

A single background layer in GIMP has no transparency, so deleting pixels fills them with the background colour. Layer → Transparency → Add Alpha Channel gives the layer somewhere to store transparency [1].

Foreground Select: research inside GIMP

Foreground Select is based on SIOX (Simple Interactive Object Extraction) from Freie Universität Berlin and first appeared in GIMP 2.3.3 [2]. In GIMP 2.10 its default engine is “Matting Levin” [3] — named after Levin, Lischinski and Weiss's closed-form matting method, which estimates soft transparency at edges [4].

Color to Alpha for flat graphics

Colors → Color to Alpha makes a chosen colour transparent, turning partly-matching pixels partly transparent [5] — ideal for logos and line art on white, wrong for photos where the same colour appears inside the subject.
