How to increase the resolution of an image online

Three steps, no app to install.

Common mistake

Does changing DPI increase resolution?

No. Resolution is the number of pixels — for example 1200 × 800. DPI (or PPI) is only a note in the file telling a printer how many of those pixels to fit into an inch.

  • Change a 1200 × 800 image from 72 to 300 DPI without resampling and it still has 1200 × 800 pixels — it just prints smaller (4 × 2.7 in instead of 16.7 × 11.1 in).
  • To get a sharper, bigger image you need more pixels. A normal resize adds them by averaging neighbours, which looks soft.
  • AI upscaling adds pixels and rebuilds edges and texture, so the higher-resolution version actually looks sharper.

PPI vs DPI

Adobe draws the line clearly: PPI is the pixel density of the digital image; DPI is the dots of ink a printer lays down — and 300 PPI is a go-to setting for high-quality print [1]. Changing the number in the file doesn't add pixels; only resampling or upscaling does.

What labs and platforms ask for

Walgreens lists 540 × 360 px as the minimum for a 4×6 print and 5400 × 3600 px for a 24×36 poster, at 300 DPI [2]; Shutterfly recommends 1600 × 1200 px for 8×10 [3]. Online, Amazon prefers over 1,000 px on the longest side for zoom [4] and YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 thumbnails [5].

AI resolution vs Super Resolution

Adobe's Super Resolution (2021) doubles the width and height of a photo — four times the pixels — and writes a new DNG [6]. Online AI upscalers go further (to 8K or 128 MP here) and work on any format, but both are making educated guesses about detail that wasn't captured.

How do I increase the resolution of an image?

Does changing DPI increase resolution?

No. DPI (or PPI) is only a print setting stored in the file. Changing 72 to 300 DPI without resampling keeps exactly the same pixels — the print just gets smaller. To really increase resolution you need more pixels, which is what upscaling adds.
