Two different jobs
Classic super-resolution tries to recover the image that was there: models such as ESRGAN and Real-ESRGAN are trained on pairs of high- and low-resolution photos and learn to add plausible texture without changing content [1][2]. A creative upscaler goes further — it uses a diffusion model guided by the small image, so it can paint detail that was never captured [3].
Why the slider matters
There is a proven trade-off here: the more realistic and detailed an upscale looks, the further it can drift from the true image — the perception–distortion trade-off [4]. Magnific exposes the same trade-off as creativity and resemblance sliders; Kenerate's Clarity Pro exposes it as one creativity dial from -10 to +10.
A simple rule
Pick by what the image is for:
- Concept art, game textures, renders, landscapes for wallpaper: creative is fine — start at 0 and raise it.
- Faces, products, text, documents, evidence: stay faithful (Real-ESRGAN, Image Upscaler, Kenerate Upscale).
- Old or blurry family photos: a restore engine (Phota Enhance) — and check the face against the original.
