What is an FBX viewer?

An FBX viewer is a tool that opens Autodesk's .fbx scene format without Maya, 3ds Max or a game engine. Kenerate's free FBX viewer runs in your browser with three.js: see the model with embedded textures, switch to clay or wireframe, and read its triangle and mesh counts. It shows the rest pose; nothing is uploaded.

Why this tool

FBX without the heavyweight software

FBX is the lingua franca of game and animation pipelines — and usually needs big software to open. Not here.

  • A stylised treasure chest 3D asset on a grid floor with gizmo arrows

    Game assets, checked fast

See a prop or character's shape, texture and polycount before you import it into Unity or Unreal.

    Try it
  • A brass compass model, half wireframe and half textured

    Mesh first

Clay and wireframe show the real geometry under the texture — handy for judging AI-made or marketplace assets.

Also

What else it does

  • Embedded textures

Textures packed inside the FBX are applied. Files that point at textures in another folder open untextured.

  • Polycount

Triangle, vertex and mesh counts tell you if an asset suits mobile, web or PC budgets.

  • Open format out

Save as GLB for the web and most engines, or OBJ for older tools.

  • Any computer

Works on Mac, Windows, Linux and Chromebook in a modern browser.

How it works

How an FBX opens in your browser

Using three.js's FBX loader, on your device.

  • Read

The binary or ASCII FBX is read into memory.

  • Parse the scene

Meshes, materials, embedded textures and the node hierarchy are rebuilt.

  • Rest pose

The model is shown in its bind pose, centred and scaled to fit the view.

  • Inspect

Orbit, change shading, read the stats or save to an open format.

Steps
4 steps
  1. Step 1

    Open the FBX

Drop the .fbx onto the box above or click to choose it. Or try the sample chest made with Rodin.

  2. Step 2

    Orbit around it

Drag to rotate, scroll or pinch to zoom, right-drag to pan.

  3. Step 3

    Inspect

Switch to Clay or Wire and check the polycount.

  4. Step 4

    Convert if needed

Pick GLB, OBJ or STL and download.

Make the model first — from one photo

Every sample in the tool above began as a single picture and was turned into a 3D model in the Kenerate 3D Studio. The engine is named on each one.

    AI 3D user

Someone who made a model with an AI engine can check the FBX in clay view before taking it into a game engine.

FAQ

FBX Viewer questions

Is the FBX viewer free?

Yes, free with no account. It runs entirely in your browser.

Link to this answer

Do I need Autodesk software?

No. The file is read by an open-source FBX loader in the page.

Why are my textures missing?

Many FBX files reference textures stored next to them rather than inside. A single uploaded file can't include those, so the model shows untextured. Re-export with “Embed Media” turned on.

Link to this answer

Does it play animations?

No — the model is shown in its rest pose, and exports contain the static mesh.

Which FBX versions open?

Binary and ASCII FBX version 7.x, which covers files from roughly the last decade. Very old 6.x files may fail.

Can I convert FBX to OBJ or GLB?

Yes. Pick the format and download. GLB keeps textures as PBR materials; OBJ and STL keep the geometry.

Is my file uploaded?

No. It never leaves your device.

Can Blender open FBX files?

Yes. Blender imports FBX with File → Import → FBX (.fbx), including meshes, materials, armatures and animation. Textures that aren't embedded must sit next to the file. To check an asset before importing, open it in this viewer first and look at its polycount.

Where FBX came from

FBX began as Filmbox, motion-capture software by Kaydara, in 1996; Autodesk bought it in 2006 [3]. It became the standard exchange format for game and film pipelines because it carries meshes, materials, skeletons, skinning, animation, cameras and lights in one file [3].
