The basics

What is a transparent PNG?

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is an image format that can store an alpha channel — a per-pixel transparency value. Where the alpha is zero, the pixel is fully see-through; values in between give soft, semi-transparent edges. That is why a good PNG cut-out keeps wispy hair and the see-through parts of a glass bottle instead of a hard, jagged outline.

A JPG has no alpha channel, so “saving a JPG as PNG” does not remove the background by itself. The subject has to be cut out first — which is what the PNG maker does.

Edge detail is where tools differ. For hair, fur, lace, smoke or glass, use Cutout HD; for a single item in a busy scene, use Object Pick and type what to keep.

PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG?

Which file format to use for a cut-out, a logo or a website — from the format specifications.

Why PNG is the default for cut-outs

PNG is lossless and supports a full alpha channel, so soft edges on hair and shadows survive intact; the W3C's Third Edition (2025) also adds animation and HDR [1]. JPEG can't store transparency at all — JFIF files have only greyscale or colour channels [2] — so a “transparent JPG” always comes back with a solid background.

When WebP or AVIF are better

For websites, WebP (RFC 9649) supports lossy or lossless compression with alpha [3] and AVIF stores alpha as its own image layer [4]; both usually give smaller files than PNG. Keep a PNG master and export web copies from it.

When you need SVG instead

PNG is still made of pixels, so it blurs when enlarged. Logos and icons that must scale to any size belong in SVG, the W3C's vector format [5]. A PNG maker is ideal for photos and product shots; for a logo, keep the original vector file if you have one.
