Quick answer

How do you convert FBX to OBJ?

To convert FBX to OBJ, open the FBX scene and write its meshes to an OBJ file with their geometry, UVs and normals. Kenerate's free converter does it in your browser: drop the .fbx, preview it and download the OBJ. Rigged models export in their rest pose; animation, bones and textures aren't carried over. Nothing is uploaded.

Why this tool

An open copy of a closed format

FBX is proprietary; OBJ is plain text anyone can read. Converting future-proofs a static mesh.

  • A treasure chest game asset on a grid floor

    No Autodesk tools

No Maya, 3ds Max or FBX SDK — just a browser tab.

    Try it
  • A brass compass model, half wireframe and half textured

    UVs survive

UV coordinates are written to the OBJ so the original textures can be re-applied.

Also

What else it does

  • Preview first

Check the mesh and polycount before you download.

  • Rest pose

Characters export in their bind pose — a clean starting point for sculpting or printing.

How it works

How FBX becomes OBJ

In your browser, with three.js's FBX loader and OBJ exporter.

  • Parse

The FBX node tree, meshes and materials are rebuilt.

  • Pose

Rigged meshes are taken in their rest pose.

  • Flatten

Node transforms are applied so parts keep their positions.

  • Write

Vertices, UVs, normals and faces are written as OBJ.

FAQ

FBX to OBJ Converter questions

Is FBX to OBJ conversion free?

Yes — free, no account, no install.

Will my animation convert?

No. OBJ stores static meshes only, so the model is exported in its rest pose. Use GLB if you need animation in an open format.

Are textures included?

No. The OBJ keeps UVs; re-apply the texture images in your 3D app.

Which FBX versions work?

FBX 7.x, binary or ASCII. Very old 6.x files may not open.

Is my file uploaded?

No — it's converted on your device.

FBX or OBJ for Blender?

Blender imports both. Use FBX when the model has a rig, animation or embedded textures; use OBJ for a static mesh you'll sculpt, texture or print — it's plain text and opens the same in every app. Converting here keeps the UVs, so the textures can be re-applied.

Can I convert FBX to GLB instead?

Yes — pick GLB in the same tool to keep materials and embedded textures.

FBX to OBJ Converter, explained

What the formats really store, what changes when you convert, and how to avoid the usual print and import problems.

Why convert away from FBX

FBX is owned by Autodesk and has no public specification, so tools read it with varying success [3]. OBJ is a simple open text format [2] that will open in essentially any 3D software for years to come.
