TL;DR: In a Thanksgiving card, thank the person for one specific thing, wish them a warm holiday, and sign off. Two or three sentences is plenty. Match the tone to the reader: warm for family, light for friends, grateful and concrete for a host, polished for coworkers and clients, and gentle for anyone grieving. US Thanksgiving 2026 is on Thursday 26 November, so post cards early that week or before. Below are 100 original Thanksgiving card messages grouped by recipient, plus sign-offs and etiquette. Updated 28 October 2026.
Thanksgiving is the one card-sending holiday that is literally about gratitude, which makes it easier to write for than most. You don't need to be clever. You need to name one thing you're thankful for about the person reading the card. Every message below can be copied as is, and each gets better with one real detail from your year.
What do you write in a Thanksgiving card?
Use this four-part formula:
| Part | What to write | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Greeting | Their name and a holiday opener | "Happy Thanksgiving, Aunt Ruth!" |
| 2. The thank-you | One specific thing you're grateful for | "Your Sunday phone calls got me through a long spring." |
| 3. The wish | What you hope their holiday brings | "Wishing you a full table and an even fuller heart." |
| 4. Sign-off | A closing word and your name | "With love, Dani" |
Put together: "Happy Thanksgiving, Aunt Ruth! Your Sunday phone calls got me through a long spring. Wishing you a full table and an even fuller heart. With love, Dani."
If you only write one line, make it part 2. "Thankful for you" is nice; "Thankful for the way you check on Mum every Tuesday" is the line people keep on the fridge.
When is Thanksgiving 2026?
US Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday 26 November 2026. Federal law fixes Thanksgiving Day as "the fourth Thursday in November" (5 U.S.C. § 6103), and the US Office of Personnel Management lists Thursday, November 26 on its 2026 federal holiday schedule (OPM). Canadian Thanksgiving is earlier: it was Monday 12 October in 2026 (Canada Revenue Agency).

Thank-you messages for your Thanksgiving host
A host card can go with you as a note tucked into your hostess gift, or arrive a day or two after the dinner as a thank-you note. Either way, mention something specific from the meal.
- "Thank you for opening your home and filling every one of us up, plates and hearts alike."
- "That pecan pie deserves its own holiday. Thank you for a wonderful Thanksgiving."
- "Thank you for all the work behind such an easy, happy day. We felt so welcome."

Thanksgiving messages for coworkers and your boss
Keep work cards friendly and professional: thank them for something concrete, skip in-jokes, and avoid anything about pay, reviews or office politics.
Coworkers
- "Thankful to work alongside you this year. Enjoy a relaxing Thanksgiving."
- "Thank you for every time you jumped in to help without being asked. Happy Thanksgiving."
- "Grateful for a teammate who makes busy weeks feel manageable. Have a wonderful holiday."

- "We're thankful for every project we've shared this year. Happy Thanksgiving."

- "Thank you for being part of our story. Happy Thanksgiving and best wishes for the season ahead."
Add a handwritten line and a real signature to a printed business card. A client remembers "Thanks for trusting us with the spring launch" far longer than a printed slogan.
Thanksgiving notes for teachers (from parents)
By late November a teacher has had a few months with your family, which makes Thanksgiving a natural moment to say thank you. Write it from you, the parent, and mention one real change you've noticed.
- "Thank you for the care you put into your classroom every day. We're so grateful our son is in it this year. Happy Thanksgiving."
- "Our daughter comes home talking about your class every afternoon. Thank you for making learning feel exciting."
- "We're thankful for your patience, your creativity and the extra time you give. Enjoy a well-deserved break."
- "Thank you for helping our family through a big transition this fall. It has made all the difference."
- "We noticed the change in confidence this term, and we know you're a big part of it. Happy Thanksgiving."
- "Teaching is hard work and you make it look joyful. Thank you, from our whole family."
- "Grateful for teachers like you who see the best in every student. Have a restful Thanksgiving."
- "Thank you for the notes home, the encouragement and the reading list we now argue about at dinner."
Keep teacher notes to a card or a short letter. If you add a gift, a note on its own is often the part teachers keep.
Thanksgiving messages for family or friends far away
- "Setting a place for you in my heart this Thanksgiving. Wish you were here."
- "Different tables, same gratitude. Thinking of you today."
- "Thankful for video calls, long voice notes and you. Happy Thanksgiving from afar."
- "The miles don't change a thing. You're still the first person on my gratitude list."
- "Eating an extra slice of pie in your honour. Happy Thanksgiving, wherever you are."
- "I'll be raising a glass to you at dinner. Can't wait until we're at the same table again."
- "Sending love across the miles and counting down to your next visit."
- "You're far away this year, but you're very much at our table. Happy Thanksgiving."
Thanksgiving messages for someone who is grieving
The first holidays after a loss are hard, and a gratitude holiday can feel especially sharp. Don't tell them to focus on what they still have. Acknowledge the loss, name the person if you knew them, and offer something real.
- "Thinking of you this Thanksgiving and remembering [Name] with so much love."
- "I know this holiday feels different this year. I'm here, whenever and however you need me."
- "Grateful to have known [Name], and holding you close in my thoughts today."
- "There's no right way to do this holiday. Do whatever helps, and know you're loved."
- "Wishing you moments of peace and comfort this Thanksgiving."
- "No need to reply. I just wanted you to know I'm thinking of you."
- "[Name] made every Thanksgiving brighter. We'll be telling their stories at our table."
- "I'd love to bring dinner round next week. I'll text you on Monday."
If you're sending to a household where a partner has died, address the card to the surviving person alone.

Thanksgiving card etiquette
When should you mail Thanksgiving cards? Aim for them to arrive in the week before Thursday 26 November 2026. Posting them by the middle of November gives domestic mail plenty of time. A card that arrives over the holiday weekend is still welcome; after that, fold your thanks into a Christmas or New Year card instead.
Do you need to send a thank-you note after Thanksgiving dinner? It isn't required, but a short note or card to the host within a day or two is a kind touch, especially if they cooked for a crowd or you were a first-time guest. A text works for close family; a card feels more personal for everyone else.
How do you sign a Thanksgiving card from a couple or family? List the adults first, then the rest of the household, then any pets. Write surname plurals without an apostrophe ("the Garcias", not "the Garcia's"), or use "the Garcia family".
Should you write "Happy Thanksgiving" to someone who doesn't celebrate it? For clients, coworkers or friends outside the US, "Wishing you a warm and restful week" or a plain thank-you card works better. Canadian friends celebrate in October, so a late-November card to them is simply a thank-you.
Is a Thanksgiving e-card OK? Yes for coworkers, clients and friends who prefer email. For older relatives and your host, a paper card feels more personal.
Make the card
Once you know what to write, you still need the card. Two ways to make one on Kenerate AI:
- The AI Thanksgiving card generator designs the front of a card with autumn artwork and a short greeting lettered in, such as "Happy Thanksgiving" or "Grateful for you". Keep the words on the front to two to four, check the spelling, and handwrite the longer message inside.
- For greeting images to share online, invitations and menus, see AI Thanksgiving images.
Here's a prompt you can paste into the image studio and edit:
Thanksgiving greeting card, painterly harvest illustration of pumpkins, apples, wheat and autumn leaves on a wooden table, warm burnt orange and cream palette, elegant hand lettering that reads "Grateful for you", lots of empty space, vertical card layout
With GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst, a card design from text costs 7.2 credits at 1K or 12 credits at 2K, as of 28 October 2026. Qwen Image 3.0 works on the free plan at 9 credits per image. New accounts get 25 free credits when you sign in with Google, GitHub or Discord, with no card needed, and credit packs start at $15 for 1,300 credits.
