Partly. Grok Imagine is free for a limited number of images, but video generation is not included on the free plan. xAI's own pricing page lists image generation as "Limited" on the $0 Free plan, while video generation starts with the $30-a-month Premium plan. Everything Grok Imagine makes, free or paid, carries a Grok watermark that you are not allowed to remove.

Plans, limits and terms below come from xAI's pricing page, its Grok FAQ, its API pricing docs and its consumer Terms of Service, all read on 23 October 2026. xAI changes plans often, so check x.ai/pricing before you pay.

Is Grok Imagine free in 2026?

Here is the short version, plan by plan:

  • Free ($0): you can generate images with Grok Imagine, but usage is "Limited". No video generation.
  • Plus ($8 a month): image generation included, still no video generation.
  • Premium ($30 a month) and up: image and video generation included.

So if you searched "is Grok Imagine free" because you want to make a few images, the answer is yes, within xAI's free limits. If you want Grok Imagine video, the answer is no: you need Premium or a higher plan, or you pay per second through the API.

Many articles still describe older plan names and older rules (for example a free image tier that "ended" in early 2026, or the old SuperGrok-only paywall). The table below is what xAI's own pricing page shows today.

A few things to know about the paid plans:

  1. Usage is a weekly pool, not per-product limits. xAI's FAQ says paid plans now share one weekly allowance across Chat, Imagine, Voice and Build, and a high-quality video costs far more of it than a chat message.
  2. When the pool runs out, paid features pause until the weekly reset. You can buy Extra Usage Credits (from $5, on the web only), turn on Auto Top Up, or upgrade.
  3. The SuperGrok name is still around. grok.com and xAI's FAQ still call the paid Grok subscription SuperGrok (and SuperGrok Heavy), while the pricing page now lists the Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra tiers. If you already pay for SuperGrok or X Premium, check Settings > Usage on grok.com to see what your plan includes.
  4. Buy only from xAI or X. The pricing page says subscriptions are sold only through X Subscription Corp and that accounts bought from resellers can be suspended.

What does the free plan actually include?

On the $0 plan you get:

  • Limited Grok Imagine images from text prompts. xAI doesn't publish a fixed daily number; it just says "Limited".
  • Limited Chat and agent requests.
  • No video generation, no Grok API access and none of the paid-plan usage pool.

xAI's Grok page describes Imagine as text-to-image and text-to-video "in one thread", with up to 2K images and videos of up to 15 seconds, but the video part applies to the paid plans. The FAQ also notes that a 720p video drops to 480p once you hit the 720p cap for your tier.

Does Grok Imagine add a watermark?

Yes, on every plan. xAI's FAQ says generated images and videos include a Grok watermark to show the content is AI-made, that there is no setting to remove it, and that removing, altering or obscuring it is prohibited under its Acceptable Use Policy. Plan for the watermark if you need clean images for a client, a product page or an ad.

Can I use Grok Imagine images commercially?

xAI's consumer Terms of Service (last updated 12 October 2026) say that, as between you and xAI, you keep ownership of your input and output, and that you are responsible for that content and for following the law and xAI's policies. That ownership clause covers Output in general; it isn't limited to paid plans, unlike some music tools. The watermark rule still applies, and you can't use xAI's name or logos to suggest an endorsement.

Two other policy points worth knowing:

  • Age: the Terms set a minimum age of 13, with a parent's or guardian's permission for 13 to 17 year olds.
  • Adult content: Grok Imagine also has an 18+ setting that xAI documents separately. This guide doesn't cover it.

How much does Grok Imagine cost through the API?

Developers can skip the subscription and pay per image or per second. xAI's API pricing page lists:

API modelPrice
grok-imagine-image$0.02 per image
grok-imagine-image-2.0$0.04 per image
grok-imagine-image-quality$0.05 per image
grok-imagine-video$0.050 per second
grok-imagine-video-1.5-lite$0.020 per second
grok-imagine-video-1.5$0.080 per second

Source: docs.x.ai/developers/pricing, read 23 October 2026.

There's no free API tier on that page: you need an xAI developer account with prepaid credits, and xAI's FAQ says API credits are non-refundable. Paid consumer plans include API access, but API usage is billed separately at these rates and doesn't come out of your plan's pool.

What is the cheapest legit way to use Grok Imagine?

It depends on what you need:

  1. A few images, watermark OK: use the free plan on grok.com or the Grok app.
  2. Regular images, no video: Plus at $8 a month includes Grok Imagine images.
  3. Video: Premium at $30 a month is the cheapest plan that includes video generation.
  4. Occasional or programmatic use: the API, from $0.02 per image or $0.05 per second of video, if you can work with an API key.
  5. Only sometimes, without a subscription: a pay-as-you-go studio that runs the Grok Imagine models, such as Kenerate AI (below).

Avoid sites that promise "unlimited free Grok Imagine". xAI doesn't offer that, so those sites are either using a different model or reselling access in a way xAI's terms don't allow.

Can you use Grok Imagine on Kenerate AI?

Yes. Kenerate AI (our product) runs xAI's Grok Imagine image and video models next to other image and video models, and charges credits per run instead of a monthly plan. Credits below are taken from our own model settings on 23 October 2026.

Grok model on Kenerate AICreditsAbout, on the $15 pack
Grok Imagine Image6.6 per image (7.5 per edit)$0.08
Grok Imagine Image 2.0 (1K or 2K, 13 ratios)15 per image (18 per edit)$0.17
Grok Imagine Quality18 at 1K, 24 at 2K$0.21 to $0.28
Grok Imagine video (6 or 10 s, 480p/720p)15 per second: 90 for 6 s$1.04 for 6 s
Grok Imagine 1.5 video (1 to 15 s)24 / 42 / 75 per second at 480p / 720p / 1080p, plus 3 per input image$2.91 for 6 s at 720p

How free and paid work on Kenerate, so you can compare fairly:

  • New accounts get 25 free credits, but they work on the free-plan image models (Flux 2 and Qwen Image), not on the Grok models.
  • Grok images and all video need a paid pack. Packs are one-time purchases, not subscriptions, starting at $15 for 1,300 credits. See the pricing page.
  • Per image, xAI's API is cheaper than Kenerate. What you get on Kenerate is no subscription, no API key, and the other image and video models in the same studio.
  • Kenerate's Terms say the outputs you generate belong to you, including for commercial use.

To try it, open the Grok Imagine model page for images, or the Grok Imagine video generator for clips. The newest video model has its own page, Grok Imagine Video 1.5, with specs and credits per second.

Is Grok Imagine worth paying for?

If you already use Grok for chat, search or voice every week, a paid plan bundles Imagine with everything else, and Premium is the first tier with video. If you only want images now and then, the free plan or Plus covers it, as long as the watermark is fine for your use.

If what you really want is AI video, compare a few models before you commit. Our guide Does Grok AI generate videos? covers Grok's video specs and prices, and the best free AI video generators compares what other tools give away for free.

Verdict

Grok Imagine is free for limited image generation on xAI's $0 plan, but not for video. Plus ($8 a month) adds more image use, Premium ($30 a month) is the cheapest plan with video, and the API charges $0.02 to $0.05 per image or $0.02 to $0.08 per second of video. Every output carries a Grok watermark you can't remove. If you'd rather pay only when you generate, Kenerate AI runs the same Grok Imagine models on one-time credit packs from $15.

xAI facts were read on x.ai/pricing, docs.x.ai (Grok FAQ and API pricing) and x.ai/legal/terms-of-service on 23 October 2026; Kenerate AI credits come from its own model settings and pricing on the same date. All can change.
