Midjourney and Nano Banana are built for different jobs. Midjourney (V8.2 since July 2026) is an art-direction tool: a subscription app with personalization, moodboards and style references that make bold, stylised images, natively up to 2K. Nano Banana is Google's Gemini image model family: you describe an image or an edit in plain language, it follows instructions literally, renders text well, takes up to 14 reference images and outputs up to 4K, and it is sold per image through Google's API and apps like Kenerate. Pick Midjourney for a signature look; pick Nano Banana for edits, consistent products and characters, and text inside images.
Everything below comes from each company's own documentation, checked on 23 October 2026. We did not run a scored head-to-head, so this guide compares specs, prices and documented features rather than declaring a winner.
What is the difference between Midjourney and Nano Banana?
Midjourney is an independent lab's image (and video) app. You use it on midjourney.com or in Discord, on a monthly or yearly subscription billed in GPU time. Its current default model is V8.2, released as the default on 24 July 2026. Midjourney's version docs describe V8.2 as focused on aesthetics, image quality and Personalization, and say it brings a new Edit Model that replaces Omni Reference, Character Reference and the Retexture tool.
Nano Banana is the nickname for Google's Gemini image models. The current workhorse is Nano Banana 2.1 (gemini-nano-banana-2.1), which Google's model page describes as an update to Nano Banana 2, with improved visual quality, multi-turn character consistency, accurate text rendering and search-grounded generation at 1K, 2K and 4K. Nano Banana Pro (gemini-3-pro-image) is Google's premium tier. You reach them through the Gemini app, Google AI Studio, the Gemini API, or third-party apps that license the API.
The core design difference: Midjourney is tuned to make an image look good with little instruction, and gives you taste controls (stylize, personalization, moodboards, style references). Nano Banana is a conversational model: you tell it exactly what to change, and it tries to change only that.

Which is better for realism, art and style?
There is no single answer, and we would be guessing if we gave one without a controlled test. What the vendors document points one way:
- Midjourney is built around taste. Personalization learns your preferences from images you rate, moodboards and style reference codes lock in a look, and V8.2 is described as "more creative, bold, sophisticated, and edgy." If you want a consistent visual signature across a campaign or a portfolio, these controls are the reason people pay for Midjourney.
- Nano Banana is built around instruction-following. Google's docs emphasise prompt adherence, character consistency across edits, and world knowledge (with optional Google Search grounding for real places, products and current events). It tends to reward clear, literal prompts.
For anime and illustration specifically, Midjourney also runs Niji 7 (launched 9 January 2026), a separate model tuned for Eastern and anime styles.
Which is better for editing photos and keeping characters consistent?
This is where the two differ most in documented features.
Nano Banana was designed as a conversational editor. You upload one or more photos, say what to change ("swap the jacket for a navy raincoat, keep her face and pose"), and keep editing in follow-up turns. Nano Banana 2.1 accepts up to 14 reference images: Google lists consistency for up to 4 characters and fidelity for up to 10 objects. That makes it practical for product shots in new scenes, the same person across a series, or a mood board turned into one composition.
Midjourney caught up on editing with the V8.2 Edit Model, which Midjourney began testing with everyone on 27 August 2026. It supports instruction edits, inpainting and outpainting, and generating from up to 4 image references at once. Midjourney called it an early test with edge cases to work out, so expect it to change.
If your job is "keep this exact product or face and change everything else," Nano Banana's larger reference limit is the practical difference. If your job is "reimagine this in a striking style," Midjourney's references plus personalization are designed for that.
Which renders text better?
Google lists accurate text rendering, infographic layout and localization among Nano Banana's documented strengths, and Nano Banana Pro is positioned for "advanced localization" and brand consistency. Midjourney's version notes for V8.1 and V8.2 focus on aesthetics, speed, detail and personalization, and do not make text rendering a headline feature.
So for posters, menus, packaging, social graphics with headlines, or anything where the words must be spelled right, start with Nano Banana. If you want the Midjourney look on a text-heavy design, generate the art in Midjourney and set the type afterwards, or test a few prompts before committing.
How much do Midjourney and Nano Banana cost?
Midjourney is subscription-only. Its plans page lists four tiers and no free plan:
| Plan | Monthly | Yearly (per month) | Fast GPU time | Relax mode |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $10 | $8 | 3.3 hr/month | — |
| Standard | $30 | $24 | 15 hr/month | Unlimited images |
| Pro | $60 | $48 | 30 hr/month | Unlimited images and SD video |
| Mega | $120 | $96 | 60 hr/month | Unlimited images and SD video |
Extra Fast time is $4 per hour on every plan. Stealth Mode (private images) is only on Pro and Mega. In V8.1 and V8.2, an HD image costs 1.3 minutes of GPU time versus 0.8 minutes for SD.
Nano Banana is priced per image. On Google's Gemini API pricing page (standard tier, checked 23 October 2026):
| Model | 1K | 2K | 4K |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nano Banana 2.1 | $0.0336 | $0.0504 | $0.113 |
| Nano Banana Pro | $0.134 | $0.134 | $0.24 |
The API has no free tier for image output. The Gemini app has its own free and paid limits, which we cover in Nano Banana free: what you can do without paying.
The pricing models suit different people. A subscription is good value if you generate a lot of images every month and want unlimited Relax mode. Pay per image is good value if your volume is uneven, or you only need a handful of perfect edits.
Can you use Midjourney or Nano Banana images commercially?
- Midjourney: its plans page says that if you have subscribed at any point you can use your images in just about any way, but a company with more than $1,000,000 a year in gross revenue must be on the Pro or Mega plan. The full rules are in Midjourney's Terms of Service. Without Stealth Mode, your images are visible on Midjourney's site.
- Nano Banana: Google's Gemini API terms say Google won't claim ownership of generated content, while noting that it may generate the same or similar content for others. Every image carries an invisible SynthID watermark that identifies it as AI-generated.
Neither of these is legal advice; read the current terms for the plan and app you use.
Midjourney or Nano Banana: which should you pick?
| Your job | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Concept art, mood pieces, a signature style | Midjourney | Personalization, moodboards and style references are built for it |
| Anime and illustration | Midjourney (Niji 7) or test both | Niji 7 is a dedicated anime model |
| Product photos in new scenes | Nano Banana 2.1 | Up to 10 object references, literal edits |
