Nano Banana 2 was released on 26 February 2026, when Google launched it as Gemini 3.1 Flash Image. The full Nano Banana line, as of 20 October 2026, is: the original Nano Banana (Gemini 2.5 Flash Image) on 26 August 2025, Nano Banana Pro (Gemini 3 Pro Image) on 20 November 2025, Nano Banana 2 on 26 February 2026, Nano Banana 2 Lite on 30 June 2026 and Nano Banana 2.1 on 6 October 2026.

The name causes a lot of confusion. "Nano Banana" started as a nickname and Google later adopted it as the brand for every Gemini image model, so a search for "nano banana release date" can mean any of five models. This guide puts every version on one dated timeline, says what changed each time, links each date to Google's own announcement, and shows which versions you can run on Kenerate AI today.

When was each Nano Banana model released?

Here is the full timeline as of 20 October 2026. Each date comes from Google's own blog, developer docs or announcement post, listed in the sources at the end.

The pattern is simple. Google ships a fast "Flash" model, a slower "Pro" model built for accuracy, then updates the Flash line every few months. Nano Banana 2.1 is the newest release, and it updates the Flash line, not the Pro line.

When did the original Nano Banana come out?

Google announced Gemini 2.5 Flash Image on its Developers Blog on 26 August 2025 and confirmed it was the model people had been calling "Nano Banana." The launch post described it as Google's "state-of-the-art image generation and editing model," with four main features:

  • Multi-image fusion: combine several input pictures into one scene.
  • Character consistency: keep the same person or mascot across many images.
  • Prompt-based editing: change part of an image with plain-language instructions.
  • World knowledge: use Gemini's understanding of real objects and places while generating.

API pricing at launch was $30 per million output tokens, and each image counted as 1,290 tokens, about $0.039 per image.

When did Nano Banana become generally available?

On 2 October 2025 Google moved Gemini 2.5 Flash Image from preview to general availability, calling it "ready for production." The same update added 10 aspect ratios (21:9, 16:9, 4:3, 3:2, 1:1, 9:16, 3:4, 2:3, 5:4 and 4:5) and the option to return only an image, with no text. Some third-party sites date this model to October 2025 for that reason. They are counting the GA date, not the first launch.

When was Nano Banana Pro released?

Google released Nano Banana Pro (Gemini 3 Pro Image) on 20 November 2025, a few days after Gemini 3 Pro. It is the "Pro" tier of the family, built on a reasoning model rather than a fast Flash model. Google's announcement focused on:

  • Text in images: Google called it the best model for "correctly rendered and legible text," in several languages, plus translating text that is already in an image.
  • Infographics and diagrams: built from your own notes or from real-world facts, with optional Google Search grounding for live data such as weather.
  • Up to 14 input images, keeping up to five people consistent.
  • Studio controls: local edits, camera angle, focus, color grading, day-to-night lighting, and 2K or 4K output.

Pro is slower and costs more than the Flash models, and Google still positions it for professional work where accuracy matters more than speed. If you're choosing between the two tiers, our Nano Banana vs Nano Banana Pro comparison covers the differences in detail.

When was Nano Banana 2 released?

Google announced Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image) on 26 February 2026, under the headline "Combining Pro capabilities with lightning-fast speed." This is the release most people mean by "nano banana 2 release date," and it changed the default model for millions of Gemini users.

What Google said changed:

  1. Pro-level knowledge at Flash speed. It uses Gemini's world knowledge and web search for infographics, diagrams and data visualizations.
  2. Better text. Legible text, plus translating and localizing text inside images.
  3. Consistency. Up to five characters and up to 14 objects in one workflow.
  4. Stricter instruction following, with better lighting, textures and detail.
  5. Resolution range from 512px to 4K, with controllable aspect ratios.

Where did Nano Banana 2 roll out?

According to Google's launch post, Nano Banana 2 replaced Nano Banana Pro as the image model in the Gemini app's Fast, Thinking and Pro modes. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers could still regenerate images with Pro from a menu. It also rolled out to AI Mode and Lens in Google Search, to Google AI Studio and the Gemini API (as a preview), to Vertex AI, to Flow (where it became the default image model at zero credits) and to Google Ads.

That rollout explains why many people say "Nano Banana 2 replaced Pro." In the Gemini app it did. The Pro model itself was not retired.

What is Nano Banana 2 Lite and when was it released?

Nano Banana 2 Lite (model ID gemini-3.1-flash-lite-image) arrived on 30 June 2026 in a Google post that also introduced Gemini Omni Flash. Google calls it its "fastest, most cost-efficient Gemini Image model," built for high-volume pipelines where latency matters. Google gives a text-to-image time of about 4 seconds and a price of $0.034 per 1K image. It is mainly a developer model, and few consumers pick it on purpose.

When was Nano Banana 2.1 released?

Nano Banana 2.1 is the newest version. Google announced it on X on 6 October 2026 as "our latest image generation and editing model," and Google Cloud lists it as generally available from the same date. In the Gemini API it is gemini-nano-banana-2.1, documented as "an update to Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image)" and as the efficient counterpart to Nano Banana Pro.

According to Google's model docs, Nano Banana 2.1 adds the following over Nano Banana 2:

  • Better visual quality and realism at 1K, 2K and 4K.
  • Fixed tiling artifacts on very wide or tall ratios (1:4, 4:1, 1:8, 8:1) at 2K and 4K.
  • Cleaner text rendering and more accurate infographic layouts.
  • Up to 14 reference images (up to 4 consistent characters and 10 objects).
  • Search grounding with Google Web and Image Search.
  • Thinking levels: minimal, medium (default) and high.

Google is rolling it out to the Gemini app, AI Mode in Search, Google AI Studio, Flow, Stitch, Google Ads and Gemini Enterprise. Some blog posts written before 6 October still say Nano Banana 2.1 "has no release date." They are out of date. For specs and real outputs, see our Nano Banana 2.1 model page.

How do Nano Banana 2.1, Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro compare?

These are the three versions people compare most. The table uses only the specs Google has published for each.

Nano Banana 2.1 vs 2.0: 2.1 is a direct update to Nano Banana 2, not a new tier. It gives the same kind of output at better quality, with cleaner wide banners and text. If you already use Nano Banana 2, switching costs nothing in workflow. Prompts carry over.

Nano Banana 2.1 vs Pro: Pro is still Google's accuracy-first model for complex professional work. 2.1 is the fast, cheaper model that has caught up on many everyday tasks. Test your own prompt on both before you commit to a large batch.

Why do sites list different Nano Banana release dates?

If you've seen conflicting dates, it's usually for one of three reasons:

  • Preview vs GA. The original Nano Banana launched in preview on 26 August 2025 and became generally available on 2 October 2025. Both dates show up online.
  • Platform dates. Third-party apps list the day they added a model, which can be weeks after Google's launch.
  • Pre-launch guesses. Before Nano Banana Pro, Nano Banana 2 and 2.1 launched, many articles predicted dates that turned out wrong. Some of those pages were never updated.

When in doubt, trust Google's own post: blog.google, the Google Developers Blog, or the Gemini API model page.

What's next after Nano Banana 2.1?

Google has not announced a Nano Banana 3 or a Nano Banana Pro update as of 20 October 2026, so any date you see for one is a guess. Going by the timeline above, Google has shipped a new Flash-line model every three to six months (August 2025, February 2026, June 2026, October 2026). That spacing is an observation, not a promise. We will update this timeline when Google announces the next model.
