How do I try on makeup with AI?

To try on makeup with AI, upload a clear, front-facing selfie to an AI image editor and describe the look — for example "a satin rosewood lipstick and a soft rose blush; keep my face the same". Kenerate's AI makeup try on opens the editor with a natural-makeup instruction filled in, so you only add your photo and press Create. Swap the words to try a red lip, a smoky eye, a bridal look or remove makeup on the same picture.

Copy the prompt words into the editor in place of the preset's look. Keep the last line of the preset (“keep my face shape, features… exactly the same”) so only the makeup changes.

Tips

Get a makeup preview that looks real

What makes the makeup look applied, not painted on.

  • Use a sharp, front-facing selfie in daylight with no filter and as little makeup as possible.

  • Name the finish as well as the colour: “matte”, “satin”, “glossy”, “shimmer”.

  • Name the shade the way a counter would: “blue-red”, “rosewood”, “terracotta”, “plum-black”.

  • Keep “skin texture exactly the same”, or the model may smooth your skin like a beauty filter.

  • Change one thing at a time — the lip first, then the eyes — to see what each part does.

  • Like a shade? Test the real product on your skin before you wear it on your face.

FAQ

AI Makeup Try On questions

How do I try on makeup with AI?

Upload a clear, front-facing selfie and press Create. Image Studio opens with a soft natural makeup instruction already filled in — foundation matched to your skin tone, rose blush, neutral eyeshadow and a rosewood lipstick, keeping your face and background the same. Swap the look words to compare a red lip, a smoky eye or a bridal look on the same photo.

Is the AI makeup try on free?

Yes, to start. A new Kenerate account gets free starter credits, and Qwen Image 3.0, the default model here, is on the free plan. Seedream 5.0 Pro, Nano Banana 2.1 and GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst use credits from a one-time pack; there's no subscription. Results download without a watermark.

Can I try different lipstick shades on my photo?

Yes. Replace the lipstick in the prompt with the shade and finish you want — “a matte blue-red”, “a glossy berry”, “a creamy nude one shade deeper than my lips” — and keep the rest of the instruction. Running the same photo with three or four shades side by side is the quickest way to narrow down a colour.

Can AI remove makeup from a photo?

Yes. Use the “remove makeup” words from the table: “remove all makeup so my face looks bare and natural, with my real skin texture, freckles and marks still visible”. The last part matters — without it, the model may smooth your skin and the result looks retouched rather than bare.

Will the makeup change my face?

It shouldn't. The preset asks the model to keep your face shape, features, expression, skin texture, hair, background and lighting exactly the same, and instruction-based editors repaint only what you name. If a run slims your face or smooths your skin, run it again or add “do not retouch or reshape anything”.

How accurate is a virtual makeup try on?

It's a good preview of colour, placement and overall style, not a shade match. A photo can't show how a product's pigment reads on your skin in daylight, how it wears over a day, or whether it suits your skin type. Use the preview to choose a direction, then swatch the real product.

Should I test the real makeup before wearing it?

Yes, especially if your skin reacts easily. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests testing a new product on a quarter-sized spot, such as the inner arm or elbow crease, twice a day for 7 to 10 days, and washing it off if redness, itching or swelling appears.

Can I try makeup on someone else's photo?

Only on your own photo, or one the person has agreed to. A makeup edit changes a real person's likeness, so share it only with their consent. Never upload photos of anyone under 18, and don't edit photos of celebrities or public figures; Kenerate's content rules apply to every edit.

In depth

AI Makeup Try On, explained

What works, what to avoid, and how to pick a model.

How does AI makeup try on work?

It's an instruction edit, not a sticker. Your photo and one sentence go to an image model's edit endpoint; the model paints the makeup onto your lips, lids and cheeks, following their shape and the light in the photo, and leaves the rest of the picture alone. Live AR try-on apps lay colour over the face from the camera instead, which is quicker but tends to sit on top of the skin rather than in it.
