Quick answer
How do I add a beard to my photo?
To add a beard to your photo, upload a clear, front-facing photo of yourself to an AI image editor and name the style — for example "a full, well-groomed beard about 2 cm long in the same colour as my hair; keep my face the same". Kenerate's add beard to photo tool opens the editor with that instruction filled in, so you only add your photo and press Create. Change the style words to try stubble, a goatee, a Van Dyke or just a mustache on the same picture.

Beard styles
Beard styles to try, and the words that get them
Copy the prompt words into the editor. Face-shape notes are Gillette's rules of thumb (Braun's guide gives much the same pairings). They are guidelines, not rules — the preview is how you check.
| Beard style | What it looks like | Gillette suggests it for | Prompt words |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-day stubble | Short, even stubble all over the beard area | Oval faces; low upkeep | short even 3-day stubble across the cheeks, jaw, chin and upper lip |
| Short boxed beard | Short beard with trimmed sides and a squared-off shape | Round faces (adds structure) | a short boxed beard, neatly trimmed sides, squared-off shape along the jaw |
| Full beard | Cheeks, jaw, chin and mustache all grown in and connected | Not rated in Gillette's list | a full, well-groomed beard about 2 cm long with a connected mustache |
| Goatee | Hair on the chin only, the cheeks shaved | Square faces (lengthens the jaw) | a goatee on the chin only, cheeks and jaw clean-shaven |
| Van Dyke | A pointed goatee with a separate, unconnected mustache | Round faces | a Van Dyke beard: a pointed chin goatee and a separate mustache, cheeks shaved |
| Circle beard | A chin patch joined to the mustache in a ring | Square faces | a circle beard: mustache connected to a rounded chin beard, cheeks shaved |
| Balbo | A chin beard with a floating mustache and no sideburns | Round faces | a Balbo beard: a floating mustache, a chin beard with a soul patch, no sideburns |
| Anchor | A pointed beard following the jaw line, with a mustache | Round faces | an anchor beard: a pointed chin beard along the jawline with a pencil mustache |
| Chin strap | A thin line along the jaw and chin, no mustache | Rectangular faces | a thin chin strap beard along the jawline and chin, no mustache |
| Mutton chops | Long sideburns down the cheeks joined to a mustache, chin shaved | Rectangular faces | mutton chops: thick sideburns down the cheeks connected to a mustache, chin shaved |
| Chevron mustache | A thick mustache covering the top lip, no beard | Oval faces (most styles work) | a thick chevron mustache covering the upper lip, the rest of the face clean-shaven |
| Horseshoe mustache | A bold mustache with long ends running down to the jaw | Oval faces | a horseshoe mustache with long ends down to the jaw, the rest clean-shaven |

Tips
Get a beard preview that looks grown, not drawn on
What makes the beard look like it belongs to your face.
Use a front-facing, clean-shaven or lightly stubbled photo with your jaw and neck visible.
Say the length in centimetres: “about 5 mm stubble”, “about 2 cm”, “a long 8 cm beard”.
Keep “in the same colour as my hair” — or ask for “salt-and-pepper” or “grey” to see it later in life.
Name the lines: “a clean cheek line”, “a natural neckline”, “cheeks shaved” — they decide the style.
Want only a mustache? Add “the rest of the face clean-shaven” so the model doesn't add a beard too.
Run the same style twice and try two or three styles before you stop shaving.

FAQ
Add Beard to Photo questions
8 questions
How do I add a beard to my photo?
Upload a clear, front-facing photo of yourself and press Create. Image Studio opens with a full-beard instruction already filled in — about 2 cm long, in the same colour as your hair, keeping your face and background the same — and the model draws the beard onto your jaw, chin and upper lip. Swap the style words to compare stubble, a goatee or a Van Dyke on the same photo.
Link to this answerIs there a free way to add a beard to a photo?
Yes, to start. A new Kenerate account gets free starter credits, and Qwen Image 3.0, the default model here, is on the free plan. Seedream 5.0 Pro, Nano Banana 2.1 and GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst use credits from a one-time pack; there's no subscription. Results download without a watermark.
Link to this answerWhich beard suits my face shape?
Gillette's guide pairs goatees and circle beards with square faces, the Van Dyke, Balbo, anchor and short boxed beard with round faces, stubble and the chevron mustache with oval faces, and chin straps and mutton chops with rectangular faces. Braun's guide gives much the same pairings and adds that an oval face suits almost any style. Treat them as rules of thumb — the preview on your own face is the better test.
Link to this answerCan I add just a mustache?
Yes. Use the chevron or horseshoe mustache words from the table and add “the rest of the face clean-shaven”, or the model may give you a beard as well. For a thin, neat look write “a pencil mustache”; for a bigger one, “a full handlebar mustache with curled ends”.
Link to this answerWill the beard match my hair colour?
The instruction says “in the same colour as my hair”, so it should. Beards are often a shade different from head hair in real life — slightly redder or greyer — and you can ask for that: “a beard slightly redder than my hair” or “a salt-and-pepper beard”. Run it twice if the tone looks off.
Link to this answerWhat's the difference between a goatee and a Van Dyke?
A goatee is hair on the chin only, with the cheeks shaved; whether a mustache comes with it varies. A Van Dyke is a pointed chin beard with a separate mustache that doesn't connect to it. In the prompt, “a separate mustache, not connected” is the phrase that gets a Van Dyke.
Link to this answerHow accurate is an AI beard preview?
It's a good preview of shape, length and lines, not a promise. A photo can't show whether your beard grows in patchy, how long the style takes to grow, or how coarse it feels. Use the preview to choose a style, then show it to a barber.
Link to this answerCan I add a beard to someone else's photo?
Only to your own photo, or one the person has agreed to. A beard edit changes a real person's likeness, so share it only with their consent. Never upload photos of anyone under 18, and don't edit photos of public figures; Kenerate's content rules apply to every edit.

Add Beard to Photo, explained
What works, what to avoid, and how to pick a model.
On this page
How does adding a beard with AI work?
It's an instruction edit, not a sticker. Your photo and one sentence go to an image model's edit endpoint; the model draws facial hair that follows your jaw, matches your hair colour and the light in the photo, and leaves the rest of the picture alone. Older beard apps laid a fixed beard overlay on top of the face, which is why it rarely lined up with the jaw.
How do I write a beard prompt?
Four parts are enough:
- The style: “a short boxed beard”, “a Van Dyke”, “3-day stubble”.
- The length: “about 5 mm”, “about 2 cm”, “long, 8 cm”.
- The lines: “a clean cheek line”, “a natural neckline”, “cheeks shaved”, “no sideburns”.
- What must not change: “keep my face, expression, skin, hairstyle, clothing, background and lighting exactly the same”.
Should I grow a beard? Questions a preview can't answer
A preview answers the look; these answer the rest:
- Does your beard grow in evenly? Patchy cheeks suit a goatee, Van Dyke or stubble better than a full beard.
- How much trimming will you do? Shaped styles like the Balbo or anchor need sharp lines kept every few days.
- Does your job or sport have rules on facial hair, such as a mask seal?
- Want to see it greyer later? Ask for “a salt-and-pepper beard” on the same photo.
