Quick answer
How do I make a face in face photo?
A face in face photo is a double-exposure portrait: one face is shown as a silhouette, usually a side profile, and a second face — or the same person's face — shows through inside it. To make one with AI, upload two photos to an image editor and describe the layout: "turn image 1 into a side-profile silhouette and fill it with the face from image 2". On Kenerate, Nano Banana 2.1 takes up to 14 photos in one edit and returns the blended portrait without a watermark.

Six face in face layouts, and the words that get them
Every layout uses the same idea — one face as a shape, the other inside it. Copy the prompt words into the editor after your photos.
| Layout | What it looks like | Photos | Prompt words |
|---|---|---|---|
| Profile silhouette | A side profile filled with a front-facing face — the classic look | 2 | turn image 1 into a side-profile silhouette facing right, fill it with the face from image 2 looking at the camera |
| Self in self | Your profile filled with your own front portrait | 1 or 2 of you | use this person twice: a side-profile silhouette of them, filled with their own front-facing portrait |
| Couple portrait | Your partner's face inside your silhouette, often for anniversaries | 2 | my side profile as the silhouette, my partner's smiling face inside it, soft romantic warm tones |
| Memorial or tribute | A loved one's face inside yours, quiet and respectful | 2 | image 1 as the silhouette, the face from image 2 inside it, gentle sepia, calm and respectful mood |
| Face and landscape | A face inside a silhouette, with a scene (forest, city, sea) filling the rest | 1–3 | inside the silhouette, the face from image 2 at the top and a misty pine forest along the bottom edge |
| Half and half | Two faces split down the middle into one face | 2 | one face made of two halves: the left half from image 1, the right half from image 2, a seamless join |

Face in face prompts to copy
Add your photos first — the side profile as image 1, the face as image 2 — then paste one of these.
Classic black and white
Face in face double exposure: the person in image 1 as a side-profile silhouette facing left, the face from image 2 inside it looking forward, high-contrast black and white, plain white background, soft feathered edges. Keep both faces exactly as in the photos.
Couple, warm tones
Double exposure couple portrait: my side profile from image 1 as the silhouette, my partner's smiling face from image 2 inside it, warm golden tones, soft light leaks, cream background. Keep both faces recognisable.
Self in self
Use the person in this photo twice: a side-profile silhouette of them facing right, filled with their own front-facing portrait, subtle blue and grey tones, fine film grain, white background. Keep the face exactly the same.
Face and forest
Double exposure: side-profile silhouette of the person in image 1, inside it the face from image 2 in the upper half and a misty pine forest with birds along the lower edge, muted green and grey, white background.

Step 1
Open the face in face tool
Press “Add your photo”. Image Studio opens with the double-exposure instruction already in the prompt box. Sign in free for starter credits.
Step 2
Add two photos
First the side profile (it becomes the silhouette), then the front-facing face that goes inside. For a self-portrait, one clear photo of yourself can work for both.
Step 3
Pick a layout
Keep the classic profile silhouette or swap in the words for a couple portrait, a landscape blend or half-and-half from the table above.
Step 4
Create and compare
Press Create, run it again for a second take, then download the one where both faces read — without a watermark.

Tips
Get a face in face photo where both faces read
What decides whether the blend looks like art or a muddle.
Use a true side-profile photo for the silhouette — nose, lips and chin clear against a plain wall.
Use a front-facing, evenly lit photo for the face inside; shadows across it get lost in the blend.
Say which photo does what: “image 1 as the silhouette”, “the face from image 2 inside it”.
Pick a background: plain white or off-white gives the cleanest edge; dark suits a poster look.
Black and white or one tint (sepia, blue) blends better than two full-colour photos.
Add “keep both faces exactly as in the photos” and run it twice — pick the take where both read.

FAQ
Face in Face Photo questions
8 questions
What is a face in face photo?
It's a double-exposure portrait where one face sits inside another. Usually one person is shown as a side-profile silhouette and a second face — a partner, a parent, or the same person looking at the camera — shows through inside the shape. Photographers used to make it by exposing one film frame twice; today it's a blend of two photos.
Link to this answerHow do I make a face in face photo with AI?
Upload two photos to an AI image editor and describe the layout in one sentence: “turn the person in image 1 into a side-profile silhouette facing right and fill it with the face from image 2, plain white background, black and white”. On Kenerate the button above opens Image Studio with that instruction filled in, so you add the photos and press Create.
Link to this answerCan I make one with only one photo?
Yes, for a self-portrait: ask the model to “use this person twice — a side-profile silhouette of them, filled with their own front-facing portrait”. The model has to imagine the profile, so it works best with a clear photo; a real side-profile photo as a second upload gives a more faithful silhouette.
Link to this answerIs it free?
Free to start. A new Kenerate account gets starter credits, and Qwen Image 3.0 — which takes up to 3 photos — is on the free plan. Nano Banana 2.1, the default here, uses 21 credits per 1K image however many photos you add; credits come in one-time packs, with no subscription. Downloads have no watermark.
Link to this answerWhich photos work best?
For the silhouette, a sharp side profile against a plain wall, with the nose, lips and chin clear. For the face inside, a front-facing photo in soft, even light. Similar lighting in both photos makes the blend look like one picture. JPG, PNG or WebP all work.
Link to this answerIs a face in face photo the same as a face swap?
No. A face in face photo keeps both faces as they are and arranges them as a silhouette and an inner portrait. A face swap replaces one person's face with another's, which Kenerate doesn't offer for real people. “Face in hole” tools are different again: they paste your face into a template scene.
Link to this answerHow do I do a double exposure without Photoshop?
Describe it to an AI editor instead of building layers. Adobe's own Photoshop method places one photo over the other and blends the layers by hand; an image model does the blending from a sentence. You still choose the background, the tint and which photo becomes the silhouette.
Link to this answerCan I use someone else's photo?
Only with their permission. A face in face portrait shows two real people, so use your own photos or ones the people in them agreed to — a couple portrait or a tribute to a family member is a common reason to make one. Don't use photos of public figures, and never upload photos of anyone under 18.

Face in Face Photo, explained
What works, what to avoid, and how to pick a model.
On this page
Where does the face in face look come from?
From film double exposures: the same frame was exposed twice, so the second picture showed through the dark parts of the first. A side profile against a bright sky turned into a silhouette, and whatever was photographed next filled it. Digital editors copy the effect with layers, a blend mode and a mask, and an AI image editor does the same from a sentence.
A face inside a face is the portrait version of that trick. It reads as a story about two people — a couple, a parent and their adult child, a person and the memory of someone — or about one person's two sides, which is why it's popular for anniversaries, tributes and album covers.
How do I write a face in face prompt?
Four parts are enough:
- Roles: “the person in image 1 as a side-profile silhouette”, “the face from image 2 inside it”.
- Direction: “facing right” or “facing left”, and whether the inner face looks at the camera.
- Finish: black and white, sepia, one colour tint, plus “plain white background” or “dark background”.
- What must not change: “keep both faces exactly as in the photos”.
What can go wrong, and how do I fix it?
The usual problems have one-line fixes:
- The two faces merge into one stranger: say “both faces stay recognisable” and use a single tint.
- The silhouette loses the nose or chin: upload a real side-profile photo instead of asking the model to imagine one.
- The inner face is too dark: ask for “the inner face brighter, softly lit” or a white background.
- Too busy: drop the landscape and keep just the two faces.
