Quick answer
What is AI pool design, and how do you use it?
AI pool design means uploading a photo of your own backyard and getting it back with a swimming pool drawn in — the shape, coping, decking and planting around it — while the house, fence, trees and camera angle stay the same. On Kenerate AI you do it with Seedream 5.0 Pro: describe the pool and say what must stay. The result is a concept picture, not an engineered plan — a real pool still needs a permit, your local setbacks and a safety barrier such as the 48-inch fence the U.S. CPSC recommends.

Pool concepts that still look like your yard
What gives a usable picture.
Shoot from the back door or an upstairs window so the whole yard, the house wall and the fence line are in frame — in daylight, level, no zoom.
Show the slope: a yard that falls away is where a raised edge or an infinity edge makes sense; a flat photo hides it.
Say where the pool goes and how big it reads — “a 12 × 24 ft rectangular pool centred on the lawn, 10 ft from the house”. The model won't measure, but it places things better.
Pin what stays: “keep the house, the back door, the boundary fence, the oak tree and the camera angle the same”.
Name the materials: “light travertine coping, porcelain pavers, white plaster finish, blue waterline tile” — not just “luxury pool”.
Draw the safety fence into the concept — “a 4-foot black aluminium pool fence with a self-closing gate” — so the picture shows what the yard will really look like.
Compare with the photo: a moved tree, a wider yard or a missing fence panel is the model, not your property.

FAQ
AI Pool Design Generator questions
9 questions
What is an AI pool design generator?
A tool that draws a swimming pool into a photo of your own backyard — the shape, coping, decking, planting and lighting — from a text prompt, so you can see the idea in your yard before you call a pool builder. On Kenerate AI you upload the photo to Seedream 5.0 Pro, describe the pool and say what must stay, such as the house, fence and trees.
Link to this answerCan AI put a pool in a photo of my backyard?
Yes, as a picture. Upload the photo, describe the pool and where it goes, and add “keep the house, fence, trees and camera angle the same”. In our garden tests on one backyard photo, Seedream 5.0 Pro kept the house, door, window, fence and tree across three styles — but once it also turned a paved slab into a deck it hadn't been asked to touch, so compare every result with your photo.
Link to this answerIs there a free AI pool designer?
You can start free. A new Kenerate account gets 25 starter credits, and Qwen Image 3.0 is on the free plan: an edit with one photo costs 9.9 credits, enough for a few shape and placement drafts. Seedream 5.0 Pro, the best pick for a finished concept, costs 13.5 credits per image at 1K or 1.5K and 27 at 2K, from one-time credit packs. Downloads have no watermark.
Link to this answerIs an AI pool design a real plan I can build from?
No. It is a concept picture. An image model doesn't survey the lot, know where the property line, septic field or utility lines are, or design the shell, plumbing, drainage and electrics. A pool builder and your local building department turn the idea into a permitted plan; in the US, call 811 before anyone digs.
Link to this answerWhat fence does a backyard pool need?
That is set by your local code, but the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's voluntary barrier guidelines are the common reference: a barrier at least 48 inches high, no more than 4 inches of gap underneath (2 inches over grass or gravel), openings that a 4-inch ball can't pass, and gates that open outward, away from the pool, and close and latch by themselves. Ask the AI to draw that fence so the concept is honest.
Link to this answerCan AI design a small plunge pool or a pool for a small yard?
It can show one. Ask for “a compact plunge pool” or “a narrow lap pool along the side fence” and give a rough size, then check the result: image models tend to make pools bigger and yards wider than they are. Setbacks from the house and the property line, set by your town, decide what really fits.
Link to this answerCan I try different pool shapes, decks or coping?
Yes. Generate two or three shapes first — rectangular, freeform, L-shaped — then keep the one you like and change one thing at a time. In Edit Studio, Change Region lets you paint only the deck or only the coping and describe the new material, so two versions differ in one thing and are easy to compare.
Link to this answerCan I use photos of the real pavers, tile or fence I'm considering?
Yes. Add the product photos as extra references next to your backyard photo and say where each goes — “use the paver in image 2 for the deck, the fence panel in image 3 around the pool”. Nano Banana 2.1 takes up to 14 images, Seedream 5.0 Pro up to 10. Check colour against a real sample in your own light.
Link to this answerHow much does an AI pool concept cost on Kenerate?
It's priced per image in credits, from code: Seedream 5.0 Pro 13.5 credits at 1K or 1.5K and 27 at 2K; Nano Banana 2.1 21 at 1K, 31.5 at 2K and 42 at 4K; GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst 11.7 credits for a medium-quality 1K edit with one photo, plus 4.5 per extra reference; Qwen Image 3.0 9.9 with one photo. No subscription is needed. These are image prices — not what a pool costs to build.

AI Pool Design Generator, explained
What works, what to avoid, and how to pick a model.
On this page
Which Kenerate model should you use for a pool concept?
All four take your backyard photo as a reference and edit it rather than inventing a new yard. Credits are per image, read from the app's price code on 22 October 2026.
- Seedream 5.0 Pro — adds a pool to the whole-yard photo, and is the default model of Change Region in Edit Studio, where you paint only the lawn or patio that becomes the pool. Up to 10 images. 13.5 credits at 1K or 1.5K, 27 at 2K.
- Nano Banana 2.1 — when real products matter: photos of the pavers, waterline tile, fence panel or loungers you're pricing. Up to 14 images, 1K to 4K. 21 credits at 1K, 31.5 at 2K, 42 at 4K.
- GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst — careful, literal edits (“change only the coping, keep everything else”). Up to 16 images. 11.7 credits for a medium-quality 1K edit with one photo, plus 4.5 per extra image.
- Qwen Image 3.0 — on the free plan; the default AI Edit model. Up to 3 images. 9.9 credits with one photo. Good for rough shape and placement drafts.
- Photo too tight? Crop & Expand in Edit Studio widens the frame first, so the pool has room in the picture — the new edges are invented, so don't plan around them.
Pool shapes and the words that work
“A pool” gives a generic resort render. Name the shape, the edge and the finish:
- Rectangular / geometric — “12 × 24 ft rectangular pool, light travertine coping, white plaster finish, blue glass waterline tile”.
- Freeform / natural — “freeform pool with curved edges, natural boulders at one end, planting right to the coping”.
- Plunge pool — “compact plunge pool, about 8 × 12 ft, raised concrete wall with a timber bench, built-in steps”.
- Lap pool — “narrow lap pool along the side fence, dark grey interior, flush stone deck”.
- Infinity or vanishing edge — only on a yard that really falls away: “vanishing edge on the downhill side, catch basin below”.
- Pool with spa — “rectangular pool with a raised spa in one corner, sheer water spillover”.
- Above-ground with a deck — “above-ground pool set into a composite deck at rim height, privacy screen on one side”.
Decking, coping and planting around the pool
Most of what makes a pool look finished is the 6 to 10 feet around it. Describe the deck material (travertine, concrete pavers, porcelain, stamped concrete, composite boards), the coping edge, shade (a pergola, an umbrella, a tree you keep), lighting (underwater LEDs, path lights) and low planting that won't drop leaves into the water.
Change one surface at a time: once the pool shape is right, paint only the deck in Change Region and try two materials side by side. Seedream 5.0 Pro edits the area you paint and leaves the rest of the photo as it was.
Is an AI pool design a real plan? Permits, setbacks and barriers
No — it shows what a pool could look like, not whether it fits or is allowed. A town or county decides the permit, the setbacks from the house, the property lines and any septic field, and the barrier rules. An image model knows none of that and will happily put a pool on top of a drain field or right against the fence.
For the barrier, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission publishes voluntary guidelines that many states and localities have written into their codes. Draw them into the concept so the picture matches what you'd actually build:
- A barrier (fence or wall) at least 48 inches high, measured on the pool side.
- No more than 4 inches between the ground and the bottom of the barrier — 2 inches over grass or gravel.
- No opening that a 4-inch sphere can pass through; climbable ledges on solid walls should be avoided.
- Gates that open outward, away from the pool, and are self-closing and self-latching; a latch lower than 54 inches goes on the pool side, at least 3 inches below the top.
- If the house wall is part of the barrier: alarms on doors to the pool, a power safety cover, or other protection such as self-closing doors.
- These are guidelines, not a standard — your local code wins. In the US, call 811 before any digging.
The prompt that keeps it your backyard
Copy this and fill in the brackets:
- “Add a [shape] swimming pool to this backyard, about [size], [distance] from the house.”
- “Coping: [material]. Interior: [finish + colour]. Deck: [material]. Lighting: [type].”
- “Around it: [planting / shade / loungers]. A [height + style] pool fence with a self-closing gate.”
- “Keep the house, back door, boundary fence, trees, slope and camera angle exactly the same.”
From picture to pool builder
Use the picture to decide what you like — shape, materials, how much yard is left — then take it to a pool contractor with your property survey. They check soil, access for the excavator, drainage, the equipment pad and power, and draw the permitted plan.
For the rest of the yard — beds, paths, lawn and plants — use the AI garden design generator; for the house itself, the AI architecture generator.
